George Gordon Meade
George Gordon Meade was an American Army officer that was educated at West Point Military College. He joined the Union forces right after the Civil War broke out. He protected the Washington D.C. area. He fought at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. In the same year, he also fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was commander of the Army of the Potomac and worked closely with General Ulysses S. Grant. He was promoted major general in the regular army in 1864 and commanded several military districts until his death.
